About Us

The USS NOMAD NX-72382

The U.S.S Nomad NX-72382 is a chapter of Starfleet International Inc. The Chapter is a correspondence based Chapter with members in Muskoka, Halton, Durham and Hamilton Regions in Ontario. Other provinces are represented by Manitoba and Newfoundland, Canada. Being truly International the Nomad proudly has members in Michigan, USA as well.  The Chapter talks all things sci-fi through various social media ports.

The chapter has a focus of community service. Fund raising and volunteerism is important to the group as a whole. Members also participate in comic-cons and cosplay.

The Star Trek aspect is fan based. The "Ship" is a Nova Class Starship that is primarily a Science Vessel. Some modifications were made to the ship due to the Borg-Invasion of the Sol-Sector. The club uses Starfleet ranks, which are fictitious and simply part of the experience. We also have specialties and Billets such as Captain, XO, Chief Operations Officer, Chief of Security, Medical and more. Just like in Star Trek!

Being part of SFI.org (Starfleet International) allows you to take courses through the academy, leading to "degree" programs and a means to gain promotion.  As well, Starfleet offers a Marine Path and a MACO (Military Assault Command Operative) path.

Of course, you can join to just be a part of Starfleet and enjoy Trek with other fans of the 50 Year phenomenon.

History Of the Nomad

The USS Nomad

Ship History

The name Nomad has a history in Star Trek from almost the beginning.  The NOMAD was originally a prototype computer space probe which transformed itself into a terminator of “imperfect biological specimens”.  It was from the Star Trek, The Original Series episode entitled “The Changeling”.  This was the third episode of Season 2 in 1967.

As for Starfleet International, the Starship Nomad has a History that spans nearly 3 decades.

Shuttlecraft Nomad was based out of Leavenworth, Kansas and was launched from the USS Stargazer in 1991. The Stargazer was a chapter located in Region 12 out of Kansas City.  The Nomad was launched under the Command of Commander Mike Malotte.  In 1992, Shuttle NOMAD was recognized as the Region 12 Shuttle of the year. The ship was commissioned as a full chapter in 1992 and was redesigned as Constitution Class refit with the registry number NCC-1805. The ship's motto was "Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning"

In February of 1997, the Nomad was again refitted and recommissioned as the USS Nomad, NCC-78500, a Nomad Class Exploratory Cruiser. The Nomad also served as the Flagship of Region 12 while Captain Malotte was the R12 Region Coordinator.

Mike Malotte was the original CO of the Nomad.   When he left the ship (Malotte moved from Kansas to Arkansas), Ken Janasz took over as Commanding Officer. Carl Johnson later succeeded him as Captain.   When Captain Johnson became R12 RC, PJ Trotter assumed command.

Fleet Admiral Mike Malotte came back as CO in 2006 and oversaw her decommissioning. The Nomad decommissioned in 2006, after 15 years of service

The ship served twice as Region 12 Flagship and once as Fleet Flagship.

On the 23rd of June 2020, the NOMAD was relaunched as a NOVA class Starship.  Bearing registry NX-72382 and under the command of Commander Joel Robert Ehl.  The ship will be drawing inspiration from the Nordic Nomads of Earth’s Viking history.  The Nomad again seeks out new adventures and to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Nomad Class Specifications and Technical Data

The lower two nacelles of the Nomad Class are movable, but it does not create what would be a Variable Geometry Warp system unlike the Intrepid class. Under normal cruise configuration the warp field is maintained first by one set then the other. This results in a "disruption" of the normal warp signature resulting in a warp signature that is nearly impossible to detect by normal sensor configurations.
The alternate mode synchronizes the 4 nacelles for an enhanced "normal" warp field. Resulting in warp speeds on the order of warp 9.98 for an extended time frame (24 hours+). And a greatly reduced warp field buildup, allowing an acceleration time to maximum speed less than 50% of that for a comparatively sized cruiser.

USS NOMAD NX-72382 Technical Specifications

The Nova-class NOMAD was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and was designed to serve as a science and scout vessel.  This line of ships was one of the first to be fitted with the Emergency Medical Hologram program.  Additionally, the ship carries over some of the spaceframe originally designed in the Defiant Pathfinder project which includes a recessed bridge protected from conventional attacks by an outer ring.  From here the entire ship could be operated with as little as two officers.  There is also a hypersonic Waverider shuttle, docked to the underside of the saucer section.  The Nomad is able to land on a planet’s surface.

New club’s first fundraiser supports companion dogs for veterans

BY COMMUNITY

Calling all Star Trek fans! USS Nomad, a new chapter of Starfleet, the international Star Trek fan association, has formed in Huntsville and they want you to join.

The USS Nomad is named after the Star Trek ship and has 17 members across Ontario. Five of them are based in Huntsville.

The club, which formed in June, is one of 20 regional clubs around the world.

While the USS Nomad is only a few months old, people have been creating Star Trek-based clubs for more than 40 years.

The club’s goal is not only to have fun and chat all things Star Trek, but also to do charity work and fundraise for causes that are important to them.

“We want to make friends while also giving back to our community and fundraising locally as well,” said president Rob Ehl.

This past weekend the club hosted their first event, in collaboration with the legion, decked out in Star Trek-themed costumes.

The members who are based in Huntsville met at the legion and walked 5km in order to raise money for the third annual Canadian Walk For Veterans.

This year the Walk for Veterans is supporting the purchase of canine companions for veterans and first responders who have PTSD.

“With my background in law enforcement and having family and friends in the military I believe the dogs are often essential for some people’s survival,” said Ehl. “I have witnessed dogs calm people in stressful times and significantly helped their anxiety.”

Due to COVID-19, the new club will be interacting primarily over social media but will meet up when they are able to.

If you’d like more information on becoming a member of USS Nomad, email uss.nomad.command@gmail.com. As a member of the club you’ll be able to participate in courses and classes offered by the Starfleet Fan Association as well as local events. Learn more about Starfleet here

**************************************************************************

On September 26 and 27th, 2020 members of the Crew will be participating in the Canadian walk for Veterans.  This year's event due to circumstances will be a virtual event were you can run, walk, cycle or do any exercise to complete the  challenge.

To the Military veteran, First Responders, Civil Servants and every essential worker across the country, this walk is for you!

This year's proceeds are going to Courageous Companions.  An organizations who has the goal to provide top quality service dogs to veterans and first responders to help live full and meaningful lives.

Service dogs help person's who experience PTSD, OSI's and other traumatic events.  The cost to develop these dogs is immense and precludes some from having an dog.

The crew of the USS Nomad will be supporting this event by participation in Huntsville, Ontario and other communities.  In Huntsville, there will be members participating in Star Trek Cosplay while they walk.

Join us or offer your support to this great cause!
